A Lost Diamond

I think we've all lost something that's super valuable or important to us. A few years back, my mom, grandma, sister-in-law and I went on a girls' beach trip. It was great... until my mom lost the diamond in her ring. My dad had just gotten it for her for their anniversary. Her original engagement ring had fallen behind the sink years ago and it was impossible to get to. She had wanted a new ring for so long, and then when she finally got one, the diamond managed to fall out and was untraceable.

Our first response as faith-filled women was prayer. We were praying and searching and my mom was quite frantic. She had lost something that was valuable and that had become a part of her life. Plus we had been on the beach earlier that day which meant the diamond should have literally been ANYWHERE. Long story short, we found the diamond in the bathroom of the condo we rented for the week. Praise the Lord. But I look at how this situation created panic and chaos and I think what if we lost something bigger, something more valuable and what if everyone lost this thing?

The internet. What would happen if something came along for even a day that would take away our internet? No access. We wouldn't have access to our bank accounts, to our social medias, to our online schooling systems like Blackboard. Security systems would go down. Work places, hospitals, businesses, factories, and so much more would have to shut down because of their dependence on the internet.

What about you personally? What do you rely on the internet for? How would you respond to not having any access to it? You see the difference between losing my mom's ring and losing access to the internet is that the diamond can be replaced. It would be expensive, but it would be feasible. However, how would you replace the internet or the things you have on the internet? What about all the pictures you would lose from the cloud? Or the money you would lose from the bank? Or the connections you would lose from not having social media? Or the job you wouldn't be able to do without the internet access?

Like a diamond the internet has value. I think often times its value is taken for granted. It's become so integrated into our lives that it's impossible to imagine a life without it. It's something we just expect to work daily. It's scary to think about how much we rely on these things. It feels like our life or at least our lifestyle completely depends on them. I don't know if there's really a solution to that, our dependence on the internet. I don't foresee us making radical changes to change the way we live our lives. I suppose all we can do is pray the internet doesn't ever, EVER crash.
